With our busy, modern lives it’s easy to get caught up in day-to-day activities and forget all about making our bedroom into a private oasis where we can relax and unwind. Everyone wants a bedroom that’s cosy, inviting, and tailored to suit their tastes, but unless you’re an interior designer, chances are your lofty bedroom ideas are just that – ideas. Rather than let you go another night with a ho-hum bedroom, we’ve got five DIY tips (no designer degree required) to transform your sleeping space into a restful and welcoming retreat.
  • Declutter
  • Rearrange
  • Use Soothing Colours
  • Layer Textures
  • Engage Your Senses

Declutter & Get Rid of Excess

Do you know why real estate agents tell you to declutter and clean your home before listing it for sale? It’s because it makes the space seem bigger and more inviting. When you walk into your bedroom it should feel instantly relaxing, like your own little escape from the pressures of daily life and responsibilities. The last thing you should see is stacks of old mail or piles of laundry.

Looking at the whole room can be overwhelming. Instead, tackle the clutter in categories. It’s easiest to begin in layers, lightest first. As you go along you can decide whether it’s time to get rid of items or if they should be put away and stored elsewhere.

Begin by rounding up and removing any random papers, documents, or books that don’t belong in the room. Next gather all the clothing items and accessories. Lastly, check for any items that aren’t necessary for sleeping or getting dressed and remove as many as possible. Envision a five-star hotel room, very nicely appointed, but without extraneous items.

Rearrange the Furniture

How long has it been since you tried a new layout for your bedroom décor? Even the smallest, most unique spaces can usually accommodate more than one arrangement. Since you’re already in the mood to make changes, consider implementing a little Feng Shui in the space. When it comes to positioning your bed, Feng Shui practitioners recommend placing it as far away from the door as possible, but where you can still view the entry area. The key is to make sure your feet and head are not aligned with the entry or pointing towards the door. It’s also best to avoid positioning the bed beneath a fan or under a window.

Inject Some Colour into Your Space

Another Feng Shui recommendation for bedrooms is to incorporate soothing colours. White can create a clean and tidy base, but it can also feel a bit plain. Versatile standbys, if you’d like to infuse a little character into the space, include muted shades of blue, green, and violet. All of which have their own unique colour psychology and effect on your mind and well-being.

Layer Texture for a Touch of Intrigue

For a polished and sophisticated look, make sure you add a bit of texture to your bedroom. Most furniture and accessories are smooth and unblemished. Try adding in (just a few) pieces that remind you of nature and look like they’d be interesting to touch. Think; wood, tile, pottery, or even a nubby tapestry.

Tap into the Power of Scent

Good design is not merely visual; it’s a complete experience. Focus on how you want to feel when you’re in your bedroom. Calm? Relaxed? Inspired? What kind of fragrances make you feel that way? Scent has a powerful impact on people. By filling your room with lightly scented candles or essential oils, you can create a room that engages your senses in a positive way as soon as you open the door.  Some classic and relaxing scents worth trying are lavender, vanilla, chamomile, bergamot, sandalwood, and ylang-ylang.
